Curly Maple Tea TablesThis work in progress is a pair of curly maple tea tables, similar to those seen in the gallery. When completed, these tables are destined for sale at a local art gallery.Basic pieces of the table frame: aprons, tapered leg with mortises and rabbeted molding slot, and stock from which leg moldings are cut.
Prior to assembly, pockets are mortised in the back side of each apron to prepare for a mechanical connection of the table top to frame called "buttons".
Shown here is the mortise-and-tenon joinery used to connect table aprons to the legs. The pieces are trimmed so that the joint is very tight and the connection is permanently held together by pegs and glue.
The table frame is assembled in halves by clamping a pair of legs to an apron.
Attaching the top to the frame of a table using the buttons. This method provides a secure attachment, while also allowing for the seasonal movment of the wood.
The two table tops, only the one at the back has been coated with boiled linseed oil in this photo to show how the finishing stage really brings out the richness and figuring of the curly maple. « Back to Works in Progress Gallery |
