Curly Maple Foyer Table

The process for assembling this tabletop begins with the resawing of several thin, wedge-shaped veneers from a thick piece of curly maple. By keeping the sliced pieces in order, they can then be arranged around the top next to one another, a process called "bookmatching". After placing the center walnut medallion, each leaf is then fitted and taped together.

After a liberal spread of glue is applied to both the substrate material and the taped veneer pattern, the top is placed into the vacuum bag. This device applies enormous clamping pressure by removing atmosphere.

After the top and bottom sides of the table have been veneered, the edge is banded with a strip of black walnut. The excess is trimmed, leaving a clean shoulder to apply walnut edge molding on the top and bottom on the outside curve.

Here, small grooves are being routed at the joint of each veneer leaf. The recess will then be filled with the same tinted epoxy as the center medallion.
