Antique Sofa Table

photo A client brought me a worn, painted, early 19th century raised panel that he had found in an antique store in Pennsylvania. It is presumed that it came from an old fireplace surround, but it had certainly suffered from years of neglect and a truly awful paint job.

However, after some vigorous stripping and sanding, a beautiful piece of tiger maple emerged. We repaired a few areas of the delicate thin edge of the panel that had broken off and built a new apron and legs. After matching the new work to the antique patina of the old piece, we were left with a one-of-a-kind, "new" sofa table.
